LB Maninoa Tufono commits to USC

August 6, 2018

We first spoke with big-time ILB Maninoa Tufono from Punahou School in Honolulu last summer, and he made it clear his interest in the Trojans was very high.

On Monday Tufono announced his commitment to the Trojann

The strong interest in the Trojans stemmed from three unofficial visits to USC, his realtionships with Clay Helton, Johnny Nansen and current players he's close with.

"First it starts off with Coach Helton and Coach Nansen," said Tufono. "I've really enjoyed going over to their camps, I earned the MVP there, Coach Nansen offered me and I've been in strong contact with them, and building a strong relationship since then. Guys like IE (Gaotetoe), Kana'i (Mauga), my cousins over there, Jordan Iosefa and Vavae (Malepeai), I look up to those guys. Seeing them at SC and seeing them being Trojans is something I've thought of."

Tufono told us late last year USC had set the bar high and what set the Trojans apart from other schools.

"I guess it's just the tradition they have over there, the way they do things and the prestigious education they offer," said Tufono. "What sets USC apart is they offer a great education that can set me up after football. Those are big key factors that I see in USC.

Despite Clay Helton and his staff closing out the 2018 recruiting process in earlier this year, he and Johnny Nansen were in Hawaii in January visiting the top 2019 targets on Oahu.

"I got to catch Coach Helton and Coach Nansen at my basketball game on Tuesday," he said. "I'm just grateful for them to come all this way to come see me. Seeing them come out meant a lot to me and my family. For them to take the time out to see me meant a lot."

The most recent additon to the Trojans from Hawaii is OLB Kana'i Mauga. Many of the kids on the island hold Mauga in high regard, including Tufono.

"Kana'i, that's my guy and I'm proud of him and happy that he's a Trojan now," said Tufono. "He has a high motor, he never stops, he's always working, grinding and that's something I want to mold my game around. I want to become relentless like Kana'i and just stand out to everyone like he does."
