Five-Star SG has strong interest and ties with USC

June 4, 2018

Last recruiting cycle USC signed three of the Top 75 players in the country in five-star SG Kevin Porter (Ranier Beach, WA), four-star CG Elijah Weaver (Rockledge, FL) and four-star PF J’Raan Brooks (Seattle, WA), but nine of them were from California.

This year the Trojans already have two five-star SoCal kids committed in Isaiah Mobley and Onyeka Okongwu, with five-star SG Cassius Stanley having very strong interest in USC. If USC was to sign all three, they would end up with the top three players in the state. SG and top WR target Drake London is the No. 7 ranked player in the state and there’s a very good chance he ends up a Trojan, although they are pursuing him harder for Football.

Stanley’s father, Jerome Stanley, is a USC alum and President/CEO of SAFE Sports Management. His mother ran track at UCLA, so there are ties to the Bruins as well.  We spoke to Stanley after Day Two of the Pangos All-American Camp at Cerritos College on Saturday and asked him where his interest stands with the Trojans.

”USC is in constant communication with me, they check in with me a couple times a week, they’re an L.A. school, I’ve been around it my whole life, my Dad went there and he’s represented a lot of players from USC,” said Stanley. “So, I’ve been there a lot, I’m comfortable around the campus, it’s 30 minutes from my house and you can’t beat that.”

When you look at the list of prospects with high USC interest and talk with the guys from the Compton Magic like the Mobley’s, Johnny Juzang and others affiliated with the AAU Program, it’s crystal clear the Trojans have an unprecented amount of momentum with recruiting.

”USC has a lot of momentum going right now,” Stanley said. “I have a lot of respect for the Compton Magic and I just feel like they’ve proven that they can really recruit. They had a Compton Magic coach at UCLA (David Grace) and he recruited Compton Magic guys, but USC has the Mobley’s father (Eric Mobley) now and he’s recruiting great players there now. Playing with other great players is always enticing. USC is a huge option and the Mobley’s have talked to me a couple of times and said they’re going to start recruiting me hard.”

With Steve Alford firing Grace in mid April and USC hiring Eric Mobley a month later, it’s almost as if the tide has turned heavily in USC’s favor with recruiting the elite West- Coast prospects.

”I can definitely feel the magic,” said Stanley. “When Mobley committed and then Onyeka Okongwu committed, everyone was telling me USC is picking up and I think they’re somebody to watch out for.” will have more on Cassius Stanley and the other top USC targets throughout the Summer.
