USC Scrimmage No. 3 Recap: Sears, Jones, Malepeai & Lockett impress

April 7, 2018

USC held its third scrimmage of the Spring today and it was the first time they genuinely simulated a live game. And it made a huge difference with how the QBs and running game looked.

We’ll start off by listing which guys were playing together when the scrimmage began.

1st team Defense:

Mauga, Gustin, Malik Dorton, Rector, Cam Smith, Ajene, Bubba Bolden, Marvell Tell, Biggie, Langley,  (Fink hands it off) Ced Ware, handled by Rector gains about a 1-yard.  Tufele is also in with 1st team Def.

1st team offense:

Ced Ware, Fink, Vaughns, Falo Josh Imatorbhebhe, Chuma, Vorhees, Neilon, Petite, Clayton Johnson Chris Brown, "Austin Jackson is out today."  Fink throws an out pattern to Vaughns complete for 5 yards.

Second Teams:

Offense: Josh Imatorbhebhe, Jalen McKenzie, Josh Falo, Jack Sears, Vavae, Alijah Vera Tucker, Frank Martin, Eric Krommenhoek and  Justin Dedich

Today we kept a log with some commentary of play from the scrimmage.

- Defense Chase Williams, Juliano, Liam Jimmons, Hunter Lockett, Hufanga, Levi, CJ Pollard, Caleb Tremblay, Pili.

- Fink and the 1st team is back lined up in the gun with Ware in the backfield hand off for a gain of 10+ off Left Tackle

- Hurry up no huddle and Fink passes to Vaughns for a gain of 9

- 2nd and short Fink around the right side for the 1st down.

- Fink fakes the hand off goes around the left side should have been a significant gain

- On 2nd down hands off to Vavae who runs through the left side for a big chunk close to 15 yards.

- Offense seems to be moving the ball pretty well on the ground right now.

- TMB is already is form ready for the season

- 2nd team back in Jack Sears ball batted down at the LOS

- Sears airs it out for a completion to Velus Jones tackled at the 5 by Hufanga saving a TD.  Chase Williams was beat in coverage.  Decent coverage a little under thrown and Velus adjusts..the play goes for 40 yards or so.

- 1st and goal at the 4 QB lines up under center.  2 runs by #37 for minimal gain, Sears under center again on 3rd down TD.

- While the band is playing TUSK, SC offense called for at least their 3rd false start

- Vavae looks explosive through a hole that Vohees and Chuma opened up for a gain of maybe 5-6 Echols and Ajene combine for the tackle

- Eric Krommenhoek on a quick out from Fink, breaks a tackle by Ajene and goes for 10ish

- Fink with a screen pass to Vaughns who breaks a tackle by Biggle and then gets punched in the face by Tell allegedly.

- Left side of the Oline making some big holes as Ced ware goes for about 7
Chris Brown, Brett Neilon opened the hole

- Another false start..must be around #4

- Tremblay getting lots of reps with both the 1's and 2's

- Vavae looks like he's about to get stopped for a loss, cuts to his right and gains about 25 yards...the crowd in the background can be heardwith a lot of Ooohs and Ahhs!

- Both kicks good from 21 yards out on a FG's no good from 32 yards.

- #41 good from 40+

- Baxter mentioned that McGrath has been knocking them through from 55 yards during practices  and then

- McGrath attempts one from 50 and is just wide right

-Sears completes to Vaughns with Lockett on the coverage called back on a holding call

- Sears to Sidney fight breaks out after Sidney throws a punch at a defender. Clay has him sit for three plays.

- Sears on a keeper for a gain of 8

- Sears fakes the pitch rolls right throws to Vaughns for a TD

- Sears throws for 3 TDs today

- Fink with a nice back shoulder pass  to Josh Imatorbhebhe for 10 yards Langley and Bolden on the coverage

- Fink overthrows a wide open Sidney over the middle

- Biggie picks up a fumble and runs it back for a TD after a Bubba Bolden strip of the ball from Vaughns..Tyler is shaken up

With the QBs taking the ball and actually running with some frequency, it kept the defense in its ties and allowed for some quick passes, more time for longer routes to develop and the run game was very solid.
