USC Scoop's Spring Coaching Report: Finals With With Clay Helton

April 30, 2021

Call it the Graham Harrell Effect; Head Coach Clay Helton said a lot this morning as the team gets ready to close out a very beneficial and productive spring camp.

A lot was said, but much of what we heard this morning has already been discussed, so it was just a wrap-up and preview until we all get together again for fall camp, which is tentatively scheduled to open on August 6.  The PAC-12 Media Day(s) are also being tentatively set for July.

Typically, Clay Helton takes on all questions; he's never shied away from the slings and arrows and keeps his answers pretty well scripted and to the point. But on Friday morning, the coach was willing to give long and detailed explanations. I know many have tuned out when the Trojan head coach speaks, but that's their issue. I happen to enjoy listening and looking for new observations or changes from Clay.--Even if sometimes it sounds familiar. *cough* groundhog day *cough*

A few of the more urgent notes that were talked about, including the backup QB positions, Clay Helton said, both Jaxson Dart and Miller Moss had progressed this spring, but no decision has been made on who the No.2 QB will be yet.--And with the summer and 25 fall camp practices still left to evaluate, "Everybody's going to have to earn their job... It's all about competing, the best players will play."

For those of you who have excellent memory skills, or at the very least keep track of our Notes & Observations practice reports; you're aware of Jonah Monheim's strong camp.  On the O-Line and what they've accomplished this spring, when asked about their groupings as we advance, Helton said, "Everybody's going to have to earn their job... It's all about competing, the best players will play." --But he also added that Jonah Monheim might've had the best camp of anyone on the football team.

Injury updates, Helton reaffirmed that Brandon Pili, Max Williams, and Mo Hasan would be lost for the season after their injuries this spring. Still, he also reassured the media that he anticipates Rehab Island will be sparsely populated when fall camp opens. Updates on the other nagging injuries mentioned were Bru McCoy's hamstring, and Mike Jack's high ankle sprain. In addition, Drake Jackson's "official" illness has been upgraded to concussion protocol after Helton revealed he was in a car accident last week.  USC Scoop reported that Drake, Ralen Goforth, and Sivi Nomura arrived to practice together late last week.--Connect the dots.

Friday afternoon the team will gather one more time to finish out the spring as they head into Final over the next two weeks, and then things will start to heat up as summer approaches.
