USC Scoop's Spring Camp Day-6: Saturday Morning With Clay Helton

USC’s Spring camp 2021 is just about to wrap up it's second week, which means a Saturday update with head coach Clay Helton.  Now, having more of the sample size on his plate, Clay was able to discuss parts of the team's development  that is starting to show itself.

Some of the things Helton covered as he reflected back over the first two weeks was how impressed he's been with the energy level.--The juice and the passion the team is showing up with every day.--The culture.

Although the team has suffered a few injuries, numbers-wise, Helton still feels the team is in a good spot and has no plans to dial back the physicality.  They have 15 sessions to use this spring, 12 will be in pads, and they'll maximize all eight days of the full tackle periods permissible.--Including today's session scheduled later this morning.

The injury numbers are low; however, there is a position that has been hit hard, and Helton brought everyone up to date with the status of Max Williams when I asked who the staff would start to look at for the Nickel position with Willams and Greg Johnson both sidelined?  You might be surprised to find out that Isaiah Pola-Mao will be a prime candidate along with Briton "Bam" Allen."

As mentioned, with the team wrapping up week-2, the team will continue to build on the culture and toughness, starting with focusing on situations where the team struggled last season on 3rd down situations.--On both sides of the ball.  We were told today's live-action portions of practice would be heavily invested in these areas.

The often-maligned Trojan run game was brought up, and Helton reconfirmed what we've heard from Coach Jinks, "We'd love to have a guy that can touch the ball from 22-25 times per game."  Guys like Keaontay Ingram and Brandon Campbell’s names were mentioned specifically.

Earlier this week, I mentioned that the O-Line looks to be settling in, at least from the starters' perspective, but Helton did say this morning they'll switch things up starting with today's session.--As I keep saying, it’s still a work in progress.  But in reality, it’s for the backup roles.
