USC Football Recruiting

The Latest with USC and Mykel Williams

February 17, 2021

A good friend of mine covering Oklahoma and Texas Football and Recruiting asked me the other day, “Why is a player like Mykel Williams‍ interested in USC?”

I said that’s what I plan on asking him when I see him on Wednesday.

So when Williams met me shortly after my arrival at Hardaway HS in Columbus (GA), his reply was this...

“First off, my brother (Michael Trigg‍) will be going there and I have a great relationship with Coach Vic So’oto,” said Willaims.

I then asked if he would’ve had any initial interest without his brother Michael signing with USC?

“Probably not, to be honest,” he said.

Williams is one of the most sought after defensive prospects in the nation and on March 15 he will announce his college choice. USC is among his top schools and the feeling in Los Angeles is the Trojans will be in this race until the very end.

USC SCOOP spent a few hours on Wednesday with Williams, his Hardaway teammates and coaches. We talked about USC, his other top schools, what he’s looking for in a school, football program and much more.

While he’s one of the most heavily pursued prospects in the southeast and country, an All-American Bowl invitee and a tremendously talented athlete, Williams has remained a humble and dedicated team leader. Plus he more than takes care of business in the classroom.

First impression is Williams is an impressive young man. His coaches offered nothing but sincere high praise for his work ethic, leadership and his teammates look up to him.

Although the Trojans have had success recruiting elite Georgia athletes over the years like Kyle More, Brice Butler, EJ Price, Chuma Edoga, Josh Imatorbhebhe and his brother Daniel, a commitment from Williams on March 15 would certainly turn heads.

It's a tough battle competing with the Elite programs in the Southeast for a talent of William's level, but the USC staff is Recruiting at a level we haven't seen since the Pete Carroll days. The difference now is the Trojans haven't been able to host on campus visits in nearly a year.

USC was able to overcome “Dead Period” hurdle with Michael Trigg, but he did travel to Los Angeles for a self guided tour of the USC campus with QB Miller Moss. Williams won't have an opportunity to do the same before March 15, so the feeling among those offering predictions have the Dawgs as the favorite to land him. We’ll know in a little more than four weeks.

SS: What’s your relationship with Coach Vic So’oto?

MW: We talk all the time, like everyday. That’s my guy and everytime we talk it’s not always about football. We got a real tight-knit relationship.

SS: What’s your impression of him?

MW: Real nice dude, genuine coach. I love that about him.

SS: Who else do you talk to from SC?

MW: Coach Gavin (Morris) Coach Armond (Hawkins). I also talk to Coach (Clay) Helton from time to time.

SS: Is your intention to visit USC if you’re able to?

MW: Yes, but right now it doesn’t look like I’ll be able to.

SS: What’re some of your other top schools?

MW: Kentucky, Georgia, LSU, Georgia Tech and USC. Those are the ones I’m focusing on.

SS: Have you visited any schools other than Georgia?

MW: I’ve been to Kentucky.

SS: Georgia is the home school, a good one, what is the big attraction there?

MW: The fans, I think the atmosphere. I hated Georgia, I’m not gonna lie until I went to my first game and I felt the atmosphere.

SS: With USC, other than Vic and Armond, is there anything else you have learned about?

MW: The market. California in general is huge. I can build a big brand out there with NIL. USC is selling it pretty hard.

SS: I asked Korey Foreman about NIL programs. He says USC and Clemson were the best he saw. What is the program and the stuff that pops out to you?

MW: The privacy of the school. I think it’s No.1 or No. 2 DIV 1 private school and the education you can get out there. It’s crazy.

SS: Is Ed Orgeron the big draw at LSU?

MW: Him, the coaches, and the city of Baton Rouge. How much they care about the football players.

SS: What did Michael Trigg have to say about USC?

MW: He loved it he said he didn’t want to leave.

SS: Is he talking to you about going to SC?

MW: He wants me to go out there, he’s gonna have No.8, and I could have No.8 on defense.

SS: What are you looking for in a school?

MW: Somewhere I can be developed and cared about as a football player and person. Somewhere I can play and contribute.

SS: Has Vic been able to show you stuff about what he’s done with the players that impresses you?

MW: Great plans. If I come, you know they got Korey. He said, “who’s gonna score?”

SS: Does it matter that USC is getting 5-stars like Domani Jackson and Korey?

MW: Yeah I notice it.

SS: What’re you planning for your commitment?

MW: Maybe a video out here but if not, a edit.

SS: The virtual presentation, have you been able to get a decent idea of what campus is like?

MW: Yeah, I love that the dormitories are built above the stores and market place.
