YAY Or NAY: A Fall Football Season Is Among Us

The optics surrounding USC’s offensive line recruiting are bad.

YAY--Losing or missing out on your the top recruiting targets will happen for a multitude of reasons...ranging from roster depth, to distance from home.  It happens on occasion, even to programs with the prestige and NFL pedigree of which USC offers.   However, when it’s happens regularly, it’s time to look inward and ask why it’s happening.   The perception is Clay Helton and his staff are missing out on their No. 1 Oline targets.   And they’re losing them to an in-conference foe...regularly.

Why it’s happening is up for debate and we’ll let you decide.

However, regardless of why it’s happening, Clay Helton and Offensive Line Coach, Tim Drevno, have another OL starting in the NFL...and as a rookie too!

For whatever reason, the top guys aren’t buying what’s being sold during the recruiting process, and the results of success in the NFL are not resonating either.  There may not be a binary answer to the issue, however, there is a common denominator.

If we start to see more players “Opt-out” we should anticipate a late 2020 or early 2021 spring season.

YAY--One metric to watch from a PAC12’s perspective are the number of players who declare of the NFL draft.   Right now the sample size is anecdotal at best...some are opting out due to COVID concerns, while others are just going to get ready for the next chapter in their life, especially if they can’t do it with their teammates on campus...due to COVID concerns.

So far the Trojans have only had one player make a formal announcement, although, I would anticipate more, the longer it takes for the PAC12 to make a decsion on a start date.  The Oregon program has seen a handful of their guys make the announcement, while others within the conference have transferred to play for programs who are playing this season.

The Trojans are now up to two on the draft list after, Alijah Vera-Tucker, who earlier this year announced he was returning to play, just reversed course and will now enter the 2021 draft.

Drake London should play basketball in the fall if football is still on hiatus until the spring.

YAY–With the football season start date still in question, we can only speculate until a decision is made.  However, I would be shocked if some early talks between, London, and his inner circle have not already started.

IF...I was a part of the Drake London inner sanctum I would tell him to run the fast break over to Galen!

The question is will he be allowed.  Drake is on a football scholarship and the clarity with the rules with the seasons overlapping makes the decision an interesting one.

The suggestion of making EVERY team eligible for the NCAA Basketball Tournament is a good idea.

NAY--Yes the idea is being floated around to gauge interest.  Why play a season at all?  Why not just make the season an elimination tournament and the last team standing wins?  Or we can just give everyone a participation award.  And no, just because Coach K.  is behind the idea, it does not make it a good idea.

I think the intent behind the idea is nobel, and if all of the conferences can not get their “stuff” together, then trying to put money into every athletic department’s coffers is good.  However, in light of what’s going on today it just seems like more virtue signaling.

Kedon Slovis is officially the face of the team and team leader.

YAY--I’ve watched this young man from his days in high school in Arizona, and as he prepares for his sophomore season it’s apparent his maturity is growing as fast as his Heisman campaign!  Yesterday Kedon “Freaking” Slovis and Amon-Ra St. Brown joined head coach Clay Helton on the FOX College Football roundtable show.

I encourage you to watch because there are some things mentioned which may raise some questions on who will be in uniform and when.

PART II: from the round table...the #WeAreUnited movement.  Is it still a high priority among the players?  Amon-Ra St. Brown sheds some insight.
