Basketball Game Day Notes & Observations: USC vs UW

February 13, 2020

It’s February and just like Groundhog Day, the Trojan basketball team is struggling.   Galen is usually a cure all for the Trojans, however, the last time these two teams faced in Seattle, the Trojans embarrassed themselves...and the game of basketball.  They’ll look to reverse their 3-game losing streak although they’ll being doing it without their best inside player, Onyeka Okongwu.  Big O hasn’t practiced all week and remains under concussion protocol.  The injury was suffered last Saturday night against ASU.

Just to quickly recap the Trojans playing Sleepy in Seattle back in January...the Trojans scored 40 points....The entire game!   The Trojans as a team shot 20% from the field...For every 10 shots taken...the team would make two.   The numbers keep getting worse.  The Trojans were just 48% from the charity stripe and a pathetic 13% from behind the arc.  The one moral victory take away would be the Trojans won the rebounding battle 46-42.  In Okongwu’s absence tonight Nick Rakocevic and Isaiah Mobley will need to step up their production.

**Odd starting time with the Trojans tipping off tonight at 6:00PM on ESPN.  The trade off is the team is getting prime time national exposre.  Can the Trojans capitalize on the opportunity and impress the committee members who will be watching?

**Crazy how early the students can get to Galen when there’s someting being given away.  Tonight the first 1000 in attendance will receive a  Demar Derozan jeresey.  The line was wrapping around the USC Hotel on Figueroa a good 90 minutes before tip off.  USC is retiring DeRozan’s No.10 at halftime.  We have a Q&A video with Demar posted in the Gamer Thread. Demar Derozan

**Great start by the Trojans. I have a feeling they’ll shoot better than 20% tonight. *EDIT* They did...barely.  The team shot 35% from the field overall, and they improved their 3-point shooting to a sparkling 25%.

**Quinton Adlesh has been a disappointment and I’m starting to wonder if it’s in his head right now.  Every time he touches the ball bad things happen.

**UW is out hustling the Trojans for all the loose balls.  Their length is really annoying but at least their guys get on the floor for the scraps while certain Trojan players bend over at the hips....Do better and play harder!

**4:15 to playin the half and USC trails 23-20...really ugly  game.

**The Trojans are finding the gaps in the Husky zonedefense, however, once again the team is missing the chippies.   The Trojans trail 23-22 with 2:54 left in the half and they’re shooting 28.6% from the field.  At least they’re not turning the ball over every possession.

**You’ve heard me say it before...if you haven’t....the Trojans are the worst fast break team ever and they have no idea how to finish around the rim.  Luckily for USC... Washington does.  The Huskies gave the Trojans a hard lesson after Max Agbonkpolo clunked the alley oop dunk attempt off the back of the rim.  On the rebound the Huskies found their man for the same play and executed the pass and flush perfectly!.  4 point switchand the Trojans trail 30-25 at the half.

2nd Half

**The Trojans are trying to be too precise with the offense and are passing up open shots.

**USC opens up the half on a 7-0 run and now lead 32-30 forcing a Husky timeout with 17:11 to play.  With the Trojans now in the lead the Spirit of Troy treats Galen to a rendition of TUSK!

**16:22 to play and Ethan Anderson leaves the game with alower leg injury and the Trojans leading 34-30.  With Kyle Sturdivant back home attenfing to family, things are getting interesting.  Who will coach turn to?

**Adlesh continues to be a liability when he’s on the court.   He just needs to see the ball go in the basket a few times in a row to get his confidence going again.

**Trojans are breaking down the zone defense they just can’t finish and Enfield is getting frustrated with the officiating or the lack thereof.

**5:37 to plat Trojans lead 47-42

**4:42 to play and the Trojns have extended to a 52-44 lead after Jonah drains a transistion 3.  The seniors are carrying the team tonight...Nick with 16 points and Jonah with 13.  Way to step up guys!

**It’s very obvious Rakocevic is more comfortable with Big O on the bench.  The Trojans extend to a 10 point lead and 30 seconds later the lead is cut in half.  58-53 2:02 to play.

**The student section looks like swiss cheese...everyone bailed afte they got their jersey.  C’mon Man!!!  It’s a good game and it’s early on a Thursday night.

** Trojans can win this game at the FT line with 1:29 to play...Isaiah Mobley makes 1 out of 2 Trojans lead 59-53

**10 seconds left and Utomi for 2 FT’s...he makes 1. 62-56 Final.

A win is a win however, this team is in trouble right now.  The offense has no rhythm.  Defensively the team is playing great, however, unless the offense can find their groove, the games will be tough to watch.  With Sturdivant out of town, and Anderson questionable for Saturday against Washington State, Enfield, may have to go deeper into the bench.  Below are pst game interviews with Coach Enfield, Jonah and Nick.
