USC Basketball

Tuesday Notes & Observations: USC Basketball Edition!

January 21, 2020

Took a chance and got to USC pretty early today...around 1:00.  Was hoping to get lucky and maybe accidentally find a new defensive coordinator walking around...oh well, no luck. However, it did give me the opportunity to catch some of the Women of Troy basketball practice.

**Just how big was the Women of Troy's win over previously unbeaten UCLA last week?  Pretty big considering the team was only able to suit up 7 healthy bodies Tuesday afternoon for practice.  At first I wasn’t even sure if this was the womens team or some co-ed intramural p.e. class. Not enough bodies to go 5 on 5, so the team managers and support staff play opposite the team...and it’s women vs men.

**Coach Trakh imploring to the team....”you’re experienced now, be where you’re supposed to be.  Practice hard and elevate in the paint driving to the basket!”

**Lots of fre throw practice for the ladies.   Make them or run sprints.

**This team is going to struggle this season with the lack of depth and talent.

Off to see the men practice

**Walking from the main court through the locker room area, I bump into captains, Adlesh and Rakocevic, and I ask them if they’ll be practicing upstairs or on the main court.  Neither one is sure as they look at each other...I said good thing I asked the captains.  Haha.   Upstairs!

**Daniel Utomi and Adlesh are out early pumping out 3 balls before they head off to film session.

**I guess film starts at 2:20 and then practice because Adlesh and Utomi leave and the whole team returns at 3:00.

**Elijah Weaver needs some extra stretching with help from the team trainer, and he’s moaning.  Coach Hart and I are chuckling...if he thinks he’s tight now wait till he turns 40!

**I asked Kyle Sturdivant what kind of dog he wanted as a kid?   “A Rottweiler.”   No wonder mom said no. haha.

**I cannot emphasize enough how open and accommodating the players & staff are. I’m telling ya, these guys deserve your support...GET OUT TO GALEN!!  It will mean alot to them.

**Before I leave the facility as they start their X’s & O’s portion of practice, I hear Coach Enfield use his “loud voice”...How do we attack a match up zone, Kyle?!...Answer: “don’t stand around.”  That’s right!

**From the sound of it through the walls, it was a pretty intense practice.

**Basketball S.I.D., Dave Tuttle just informed me Kenan Christon will running some indoor track events in New Mexico at the Martin Luther King Memorial

**A couple of interesting visitors attending practice include the Oklahoma Thunder GM. and  Bronny James AAU coach

**There is also some big recruiting news coming for #BasketballSChool.  A couple of sources have hinted that USC could have a big announcement in another month or so.  And I’m confirming another nugget...more on that later so don’t @me.

Thinking about the upcoming game against Oregon Thursday night.  If I’m coaching, the game plan is to take the ball out of Duck’s senior point guard, Payton Pritchard’s hands and deny him the ball.  Maybe throw some match up Box and 1...just keep him uncomfortable.   It’s been mentioned by coach and as well as Jonah Matthews that they’re not treally a deny type of team on defense, so it will be interesting to see what type of strategy they employ.
