BREAKING: USC parts ways with DC Clancy Pendergast

December 28, 2019

Clancy Pendergast will not return to USC next season.

Reports close to Heritage Hall informed USC Scoop that the defensive coordinator was relieved of his duties on Saturday afternoon. Pendergast, who was in his second stint as a coach at USC, had his unit regress during his tenure. He served as the defensive coordinator in 2013 before taking a job with the San Fransisco 49ers, then returned to USC in 2016. The defense, which was ranked 36th nationally in 2016, was 68th in 2017 and 60th in 2018.

The Trojan defense finished 77th in total defense this season and surrendered 408.7 yards per game. They allowed 43 offensive touchdowns and 5.73 yards per play. In the Holiday Bowl, the Trojans surrendered 49 points to an Iowa offense that struggled to score points consistently.

USCScoop will have the latest on the search for the Trojans’ new defensive coordinator and the ramifications of this decision.
