Kedon Slovis Headlines Trojans Post Season Honors

December 10, 2019

This morning the USC Sports Information Department released the following:

Dec. 10, 2019

LOS ANGELES--USC wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., offensive tackle Austin Jackson and defensive lineman Jay Tufele were named to the 2019 All-Pac-12 first team, while quarterback Kedon Slovis was selected as the Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year.

Additionally, offensive guard Alijah Vera-Tucker, defensive lineman Drake Jackson, safety Talanoa Hufanga and kickoff returner Velus Jones Jr. made the All-Pac-12 second team, as did Pittman as a special teams player.  Drake Jackson also made Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year honorable mention.

USC’s All-Pac-12 honorable mention choices were:  Slovis, inside linebacker John Houston Jr., wide receivers Tyler Vaughns and Amon-Ra St. Brown, cornerback Olaijah Griffin and placekicker Chase McGrath.

Of USC’s 13 selections for the various All-Pac-12 teams, just Pittman and Houston are seniors, while only Austin Jackson, Jones and Vaughns are juniors.

Slovis is the fourth Trojan to be the Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year, joining wide receivers Robert Woods (2010) and Marqise Lee (2011) and quarterback Sam Darnold (2016).

Pittman Jr., who has 95 receptions for 1,222 yards and 11 TDs this season, won the 2019 Pop Warner College Football Award, is a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award and a semifinalist for the Witten Award.  He is fourth nationally in receptions (7.9), 10th in receiving yards (101.8) and 13th in receiving TDs.  He has played on many of USC’s special teams throughout his career (he made the All-Pac-12 first team as a special teamer in 2017).

Austin Jackson, a 2-year starter at left tackle, did not miss a game in 2019 despite donating bone marrow a month before the start of fall camp to his younger sister, Autumn, who suffers from Diamond-Blackfin anemia (a rare blood disorder).

Tufele, a 2018 Freshman All-American when he made the All-Pac-12 second team, has 38 tackles (6.5 for losses with 4.5 sacks) this year.

Slovis, a true freshman, ranks in the national Top 20 in completion percentage (.718), passing yards (294.7), completions (23.6), passing efficiency (167.6), passing TDs (28) and total offense (290.4).  His 260 completions and 3,242 passing yards are USC freshman season records, while his 28 pass TDs trail only Darnold’s frosh mark (31).  His 71.8% completion percentage is above Cody Kessler’s USC season record of 69.7%.  He has 4 games this year with 400 passing yards (a USC season record and tied with Matt Barkley for the most ever in a Trojan career) and 4 TD throws, all in the past 5 contests.

Vera-Tucker was graded by Pro Football Focus as the Pac-12’s best offensive guard in 2019.  Drake Jackson, a true freshman, leads USC with 11.5 tackles for losses and 5.5 sacks in 2019.  Hufanga, who has 76 tackles this year at strong safety, had 18 tackles against UCLA in USC’s last game (the most by a Trojan in 18 years).  Jones, a wide receiver who is 25th nationally in kickoff returns (24.5) and has a scoring runback this season, is second on USC’s career kickoff yardage return list with 1,928 yards on a school record 80 runbacks (a 24.1 average), 213 yards behind record holder Adoree’ Jackson.

Houston, a 3-year starter who has 267 career tackles, tops the Trojans in tackles this season (100).   Vaughns, who is ninth on USC’s all-time pass catching chart with 183 receptions, has 68 catches for 858 yards and 6 TDs in 2019 (this is his third time making All-Pac-12 honorable mention).  St. Brown also has 68 receptions (for 779 yards) and 6 TDs this year.  Griffin has a team-high 9 pass deflections this year.  McGrath, who is 12th nationally in field goal percentage (.867), is 13-of-15 on field goals in 2019 (31 in his career) and has connected on all 51 of his PATs
