USC Basketball

Tuesday Notes & Observations: Trojan #Basketballschool Edition!

October 1, 2019

Was afforded the opportunity to attend today’s men’s basketball practice and my goal is to make myself a regular attendee.  Today was all about getting a feel for the land and making sure I go to the right place...and I wasn’t sure where to go...other than I knew it was at Galen.  So I start at the Administrative office inside Galen.  Sitting behind the reception desk is a student, and when I ask for directions to find the right person to check in with, I get the deer in the headlights stare.  “You need to find the person who gave you the credential.”   Now I’m giving her the same stare..

Long story short, as I’m trying to rephrase the question to alleviate the look of confusion on the young lady’s face, and mine too... Nick Rakocevic appears and I let the young lady know that I’ll just follow, Rako.

**Quickly introduce myself to Nick, and he could not be more helpful.  It’s like he took the offensive rebound and layed it in softly for the score...really nice young man.  This will be a theme as I would later find out once practice starts.  As I head up to the practice court, Rako, goes into the weightroom

**Practice starts at’s 2:36 and I’m the only media member here and I’m cool with that.  I want to make USC Scoop the place to come for #Basketballschool information and news!

**First coach through the doors is Coach Chris Capko and soon there after Coach Jason Hart...and then Coach Mobley.  Each one comes over individually and introduces themself...very cool move coaches!!

**Coach Andy Enfield comes in a few minutes later and does the same.

**The first thing I notice about this team...they are long, athletic, and physically strong.  Their strength & conditioning coach looks like Aaron Ausmus...but more like Thanos. LOL

**Freshman point guard Ethan Anderson(Fairfax HS) who transferred over from UNLV will remind many of former Trojan point guard, Brandon Granville...the young man is treally thick and athletic.  he’ll be able to drive the lane and absorb the physicality.

**Charles O’Bannon looks like he added some good weight below the waist...he looks much stronger than last year

**Coach Enfield and Rakocevic look to be having a serious discussion.

**These guys work hard during the conditioning portion of practice.  In fact, it kind of reminds me of my practice sessions when I used to coach high school basketball.

**After the guys are all lathered up they line up at the Gatorade/water coolers that I’m sitting right next to and each player individually extends their hand and introduces themself to me.  I’m already impressed with these guys!!!

**Coach Jason Hart is really stressing the fundamentals.  On this drill the post up player will pop out and get into the “triple threat” position.  For those of you who are unaware what the “triple threat” position means...position your feet and body to either, shoot, pass, or drive when you receive the ball.

**Next drill up is a zone defense rotation drill...close out on the shooter and get back and dig with the help on the pass to the man on the block.

**6-6 (So) guard Elijah Weaver loves to practice!  The young man is always smiling and he loves to compete.  He really started to show out last season and I fully anticipate him beiong a team leader this season.

**The guys are communicating a lot on defense and they genuinely look like their having fun.

**There’s a really good energy and I can tell the guys appreciate people paying attention to them.

**3:15 and I’m off to football practice.
