Jinks confident in the USC running backs & their roles

August 7, 2019

When we first spoke to USC Running Backs Coach Mike Jinks in March, the main thing that stood out was his plan to stick with a RB on a drive and only substitute when his his guys needed breathers. In other words, there won’t be a lot of situational substitutions with the RBs.

The reason for that approach will simply be the exceptionally fast pace the Trojans plan to operate the offense with. Graham Harrell plans to keep defenses on their toes and catch them off guard with a smothering tempo.

Jinks has four running backs on scholarship in Vavae Malepeai, Stephen Carr, Markese Stepp and freshman Kenan Christon. He also has talented walk ons Quincy Jountti and Ben Easington and also expects them to play this season, especially Jountti who impressed Jinks in the Spring.

USC Scoop spoke to Jinks on Tuesday after USC Fall Camp Day 4 and he refreshed our memeory on what he expects from his guys, how he intends to play them and much the Trojans plan to run the ball in 2019, despite running an Air-Raid Offense and much more.

Jinks coached for Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech and the Red Raiders broke several offensive records with the Air-Raid Offense. Jinks can envision the USC offense surprising a lot of opponents this season with how prolific that offense can potentially be with the talent USC has.
