Fall Camp Day One: What To Expect

August 2, 2019

Expectations are high enetering Fall Camp v.2019.  Wash, rinse, repeat.   At USC, expectations are always high--and they should be.  The Trojans rich history and tradition of championship football is well established, so when the program stumbles to its first losing season since 2000, torches & pitchforks take to the streets.

After sifting through the wreckage of the off season, new seeds were planted immediately grew roots and sprouted new staff members, a new culture, and a new offensive identity. All of which was necessary for a balanced diet. With  the team’s foundation now on sturdier ground, USC Scoop looks at what fans should expect to see and hear from fall camp.

The media’s visual access after Fall Camp concludes with the USC Football Showcase at the Coliseum August 17, will be limited to the first 20-30 minutes of practice. So much of what we discuss after practices during the season will be based on what we can see and what we hear from our contacts.  Anticipate the usual coach speak when talking about the team, however, also keep an open ear if we start to hear more harsh tones from the staff and players made available after practice.

Accountability is the mantra Coach Helton is stressing, so it will be interesting to see if being accountable extends to the media.  Has the decision been made internally to keep things close to the vest to eliminate distractions, or is this a last ditched attempt to limit the wolves howling at the moon?  It’s more than likely a combination of both. USC was one of very few football programs areound the country that had open practices.

Today fans will get a sneak peek into the future.  The new freshmen will get a chance to prove their mettle and catch the attention of the coaches and their teammates, while preliminary depth charts are scribbled in with pencil.

No pads will be present, but seeing the young men enter thru Goux Gate onto Howard Jones Field with helmets on will be a welcome sight.  Watching them leave after each practice will be an even more welcome sight.

Welcome to Fall Camp 2019 .  Practice One starts at 4:00PM today and USC Scoop will be there to bring all the news and notes!
