4-Star OL Andres Dewerk Commits to USC

Last week we contacted Los Gatos (CA) OL Andres Dewerk‍ via Twitter to get an update on how his visit to USC went. He sent us his phone number and we planned to call him a day or two later. Our plan was to call Dewerk last Friday, but he sent us a text asking when we could talk on Thursday.

That’s when he told us he’d verbally committed to USC and planned to announce on Twitter Sunday afternoon. And now he’s done that.

What prompted us to call him wasn’t that the Trojans offered him a scholarship on May 23, contacting Dewerk became a priority after his extremely impressive showing at the Trojan’s Elite Camp last Wednesday.

As is the case with numerous prospects, there are many each year who are overrated and underrated. Dewerk is vastly underrated in our opinion. He projects as a future All-Conference level of player for us and the interest in Dewerk from USC began in late April and early May.

“At first the interest from USC was brief and I got camp invitations, team infoirmation and all that kind of stuff,” said Dewerk. “I got text messages from several coaches, Coach (Tim) Drevno eventually came by the school and that escalated into an offer. The day after they saw me the practice is when the offer came.”

Sometimes those of us covering the recruiting process can lose perspective on how emotionally impactful an opportunity to play football at a school like USC can be. Dewerk quickly reminded me on Thursday when he became emotional in talking about his commitment to the Trojans. In fact, there was a brief pause before telling us USC was his dream school.

“Scott, I’m not sure if you know this, but I’m fully committed to USC and I just haven’t announced anything yet,” Dewerk said.

That’s when emotions took over and Dewerk needed a few seconds before continuing our conversation.

“It’s a place I really love, because of the rich history there, the coaching staff and it’s amazing over there,” he said “USC is also one of the top academic institutions in the world and it’s also in sunny southern California.  I just knew it was the place for me and who wouldn’t want to live in L.A.?”

So, USC offered Dewerk in late May, he took an unofficial visit with his family last week and now he’s the ninth 2020 verbal pledge for the Trojans....and a player Coach Clay Helton and staff are extremely excited about.

“I first told (Tim) Drevno that I was committing, took a tour of the campus on my unofficial visit, came back and had a few words with Coach Helton,” Dewerk said. “The USC coaches were really excited when I told them I was committing and it was just a great way to end the recruiting process.”

USC Scoop will head to Los Gatos at some point next month to follow up with Dewerk.
